What GSM Actually Measures

GSM is a weight-per-area measurement. A sheet of paper towel with a GSM of 40 contains 40 grams of fibre for every square metre of surface area. Higher GSM generally means more fibre, which translates to greater absorbency, better wet strength, and longer usable life per sheet.

For hand towels used in commercial and institutional settings — hotels, office washrooms, hospitals, facility management operations — the functional GSM range typically falls between 35 and 60 GSM per ply. Below 35 GSM, single-use towels tend to disintegrate under moderate hand pressure when wet. Above 60 GSM per ply, you are paying for weight that most washroom applications do not require.

The critical point: GSM is a raw material indicator. It tells you how much pulp went into the sheet. It says nothing about how that pulp was processed, bonded, or finished.

What Ply Count Actually Measures

Ply refers to the number of layers bonded together to form the finished sheet. A 1-ply towel is a single layer; a 2-ply towel bonds two layers, typically with mechanical embossing or adhesive bonding.

Higher ply count improves tactile softness and perceived quality. A 2-ply towel at 20 GSM per ply delivers a noticeably different hand feel than a 1-ply towel at 40 GSM — even though the total fibre weight is identical at 40 GSM.

This is where buyers get caught out. Ply count without GSM is a marketing number. A supplier quoting "2-ply" tells you nothing about the actual weight or absorbency of the product. The only meaningful specification is the combined GSM of the finished sheet — which equals the GSM per ply multiplied by the number of plies.

The Interaction: Where Quality Control Begins

The real quality control question is not "what is the GSM?" or "what is the ply?" but rather: are the two figures consistent with each other, and with the stated end-use application?

A useful framework for B2B buyers:

Embossing is worth a separate note. Deep emboss patterns create the visual impression of a thicker, higher-quality sheet. Under wet conditions, an embossed low-GSM towel can feel premium until the moment it tears. Request wet tensile strength data alongside dry GSM when sourcing for washroom environments.

Four QC Checkpoints Buyers Should Require

1. Mill test report (MTR) per batch.  GSM, tensile strength (dry and wet), brightness, and moisture content should be documented at the pulp processing stage, not only at finished goods. A supplier with a two-checkpoint QC system — raw material and finished product — provides a verifiable chain.

2. Folding consistency tolerance.  For Z-fold, C-fold, and multifold formats, sheet dimension variance should be within ±2mm. Wider tolerance causes dispenser jamming, a leading complaint in facility management contracts.

3. Core and roll weight declaration.  For roll formats, require that the quoted GSM refers to the tissue only, not the core weight. Core inflation is a known practice in the mid-tier market.

4. FSC or equivalent chain-of-custody certification.  Particularly relevant for European markets where green procurement criteria are embedded in public sector and hospitality supply contracts. FSC certification verifies that the pulp source is responsibly managed — it does not verify GSM, but it is increasingly a non-negotiable threshold for certain buyer segments.

A Practical Sourcing Checklist

Before placing a volume order, request the following in writing:

• Combined GSM of the finished sheet (not per-ply only)
• Wet tensile strength value (minimum 100 mN/m for washroom use)
• Pulp composition (virgin wood pulp, bamboo pulp, recycled, or blended)
• Folding format tolerance specification
• QC checkpoint documentation (raw material + finished goods)
• Relevant certifications (FSC, SGS assessment, or equivalent)

A manufacturer who can answer all six points without hesitation has a production process worth auditing further. One who deflects on wet tensile strength or cannot separate core weight from sheet weight is telling you something about their margin strategy.

GSM and ply count are starting points, not endpoints. The buyers who build reliable supply chains treat them as prompts for deeper questions — not as answers in themselves.
